Grand Case

Every Friday a few of the spouses that are getting ready to go home at the end of the semester have been picking a different beach to go to. Its been fun because its given me a chance to see a lot of the different beaches. When we first got here, I did not feel a need to see all 37 beaches, I figured once I saw a few, I'd about see them all. I was completely wrong, each beach is different and awesome in a different way. A couple Fridays ago we went to Grand Case Beach. Pronounced (Grand Kaas).

Grand Case is on the French Side of the island. Its known as the Gourmet Capital. It has a boardwalk feel, to it. It has tons of restaurants and shops that go along the beach. The beach is white sandy and fairly calm. I did like the beach because it had some buildings and a wall that helped give us some shade which was nice.

There is an island that is about 7 miles away from us called Anguilla. You can see it from just about any beach on the French side of the island. I don't just mean a big huge island out in the distance. You can actually pick out the different buildings. They are all white, and on some beaches you can even see the white Sandy beaches across the distance. Once we go to Grand Case we were extremely close and the pictures I got showed that you could see the island of Anguilla from our island super well, it might just not show how close it really is. I bet some really enthusiastic person has swam there before. Its a lot closer than swimming the English Channel, which I know people have swam before.

I really did like Grand Case and I am excited to go back and visit again.

Roped off for schools. Keep boats out of that area.

La Belle Creole Hotel, Modern Ruins

Today, I did not feel like a tourist on this island I now call home. I felt like a local, for probably one of the first times since being here. Some of the spouses got together this morning and walked the road to La Belle Creole Hotel. It sounds like a tourist destination, and it was at one point, but it no longer is. In fact mostly locals only know about it.

This was back when it was thriving (thanks google images).
It no longer looks that clear and clean as far as the plant vegetation goes.

La Belle Creole Hotel was a 5 star hotel until 1995 when Hurricane Luis hit. It was built on a  secluded Peninsula. From the beach you can see Anguilla Island, St. Barts Island, and Marigot which is on Saint Martin and is the capitol of the French side of the island.  The hotel has been closed since. The property is closed off to visitors now so you have to park your car on the side of the road and walk down the long stretch of road that once led straight to the hotel. There is an abandoned guard shack as you walk down. The trees and vegetation has completely overgrown in this area.

People say that every home in St. Martin have a piece of La Belle Creole because it was ransacked after they closed it down from the hurricane. I wish people hadn't come in and vandalized it with their grafitti and other things. It would have made seeing the ruins even more exciting because it would have looked as if it did (at least some what) just after the hurricane.

The hotel built a walk way to the island, that has since been wiped away.

The island hotel has a secluded beach. Its super calm water because of a natural "bridge or walk way" that the waves crash at so it creates a little pool of water that is calm. It was great for the kids except there was a lot of seaweed and shells. Because it was private it was nice to not have to worry about a lot of people. The sand was a little rougher because it was covered in shells but we enjoyed it never the less.

It was an awesome place to visit, and see. I can not wait to take Aaron back and hopefully even any visitors that want to see it, after all its free ;)

If you want to read more about La Belle Creole Hotel I found a few links that are pretty interesting.

This first one is where you actually went to get hotel information and maybe register? It gives prices and everything, plus has pictures of what it looked like over 20 years ago. This was my favorite link I found.

This one is basically the history behind La Belle Creole, the development, who developed it, and how long it took to develop. Its an interesting read as well.

Super U

I wish this post had some profound meaning to it by the name of the title, but, it doesn't. Its actually all about a grocery store I visited today.

There is a grocery store on the French side called "Super U". Stephanie and I decided to venture over there and see what they have. I was super excited because it was a new store, or a new place to shop for me since being here. Once we got there it was still exciting, but the excitement level dropped a couple notches. Everything was in French so it became over whelming.

Super U is connected to a bunch of shops and such. If I hadn't gone with Stephanie I would not even know how to get inside. Some of the buildings even look a little french around it. When you get to the store they have all the carts outside and the only way you get to take one in is if you have a Euro or 50 cent piece. You pop in the Euro, the cart unlatches from another and you are able to take the cart for your shopping.

Like I said before everything is in French. Luckily most of it you can kind of tell by the pictures what it is. Some of the stuff they sale is cheaper than other places, but more expensive for other things.

My favorite thing I found was the frozen frog legs, and the escargot. YUM. They didn't have a wide, wide selection, at least of what I was looking for, but that is to be expected considering they are a French store.

When you check out, they did not bag your groceries. What in the world!? So I had to just throw my stuff back in my cart with out a bag. Luckily Stephanie had some freezer bags I could toss some stuff in to contain the small stuff.

Usually when you go to a grocery store here - besides Cost U Less or Prime - they will have bagger boys there to bag your groceries. They always expect a tip though. You also have to watch out for the boys that are around outside waiting, they will come grab onto your cart, and take it to your car and help unload, but again, expect a tip. I think you can usually expect that on Saturdays or school breaks though.

At Super U they compare Euros to the exact dollar, so you know when looking at the price that what is in Euros is what you will be paying in US Dollars.

After you take your groceries to the car you can return your cart to the cart station, pop in the chain and get back your Euro.

I think the part that intrigued me the most was just getting to Super U, it was more like driving in a different country then anywhere else I experienced here. Cars lined the streets, traffic is bad and you have motorcycles weaving in and out. I don't know that I'll go to Super U tons, but I am super glad I got to go experience it, and see what it is! :)

Shopping here is not like it is in America where you can go to one store like Wal Mart or Target and get everything you need . Each store here has something different that you can't find at another store. Make up isn't at stores like it is in America, they do have a few small sections at a few different stores, but the variety isn't as big. I could only find tape at Cost U Less, but it was like a 6 pack and I did not need a 6 pack. I finally found it at Super U. I FINALLY found measuring cups and spoons after looking for almost a month for them. It makes you grateful for Wal Mart and Target haha. There is a store, Carrefour (another French store but luckily has a lot of American stuff) that has a lot of produce like Wal Mart or my personal favorite Frys. Produce is actually a lot more expensive here, and not as good because they import it from the states, so if you think your strawberries are Pricey at $3.99 (or whatever they are) imagine $5.99 for maybe 6 strawberries or, a bag of grapes is about $7. Although pineapple is cheaper here and then they have tons of local fruit that we need to try sometime.

Obviously shopping here you still have the stores you'd prefer over others. Just like in the states :).

Snorkeling at Baie Rouge

We added a new adventure and beach to our lists this weekend.

We went snorkeling with Austin and Stephanie Wride (a couple I've mentioned quite a few times in past posts) on Saturday at Baie Rouge Bay or beach.

The white "specs" in this picture are actually buildings on the island of Anguilla. Its about 7 miles away from Saint Marten

That is Stephanie swimming, the water is so clear here.

Since Austin and Stephanie had been here before and had been snorkeling, Austin took Aaron and I to show us some of the good places to snorkel. We left Addison with Stephanie and Kate and took off. I'm not a super strong swimmer, and snorkeling just scares me a little for some reason. I'm not sure if its the feeling of the tube being my only means of air, or not being able to touch the bottom or what but we only got around the corner when I didn't think I could go any further. So I jumped up on the rocks, which turns out wasn't smart because there could have been Sea Urchins, luckily I didn't sit on one. I ended up swimming back and hung out with Addison, Stephanie and Kate. We played in the water and watched the school of fish that was near us in the water.

Closest picture I could find to the Angel fish we saw.

We saw just those fish by the shore, they were swimming all around close by. Some other tourists were feeding them dog biscuits. We will have to bring bread or dog biscuits next time to try and grab some fishes attention!

After I swam back, Austin and Aaron swam back to go do their snorkeling. They went really far, so I was glad I went back because they would not have had a chance to go as far if I had continued to go with them. They saw some pretty cool things and good some pretty good pictures.

Aaron Snorkeling.

This is almost to another beach. Austin later said they swam about 2/3  a mile (with going there and back)

They swam through this opening.

Round coral maybe? I thought it was a toilet seat but Aaron said it wasn't.

Aaron and Austin got to see a few cool things. Austin said he has seen star fish and even an octopus over in this area. So it is a pretty good spot to snorkel. We enjoyed swimming and playing in the water. We even played in the sand.

Cute little girls!

We had a lot fun, and were glad that the men could join us too. After word, we were all starving so we decided to go to this place over by our houses called Bar Code. They have the most amazing burgers, and they aren't your usual American, Mcdonalds, or burger king burgers. They have a Manhattan one which Stephanie loves, that has apples and pecans and such on them. Then there is the BBQ pulled sand which that is really good, and the one I had which was a Southern Style one, that had bacon and spicy mayo and a few other things. They have another one called the Mediterranean that has Caviar on it. (YUCK). All there buns are freshly made and are just delicious. Its also a restaurant that gives you an AUC discount, so that is fantastic. Aaron and I can not wait to go back.

Little side information about most restaurants here. You have to ask for tap water if you do not want to pay for bottle water or other water that comes in their glass jars. They don't have fountain drinks here (unless they do at McDonalds, Burger King, or KFC). So anytime you get a soda its a can of soda. You have to ask for separate checks. If you don't ask for separate checks they put you all on one bill and will not split it later.
